Your Checklist for Family Moving Ø Give your forwarding address to the post office. Ø Charge accounts and credit cards- notify them of your move Ø Subscriptions – notify them several weeks in advance Ø Send a change of address to friends and relatives Ø Bank-transfer funds, arrange check cashing in new city Ø Insurance – notify new location for coverages: life, health, fire, auto Ø Automobile registration – transfer of car title registratcion is necessary, also driver’s license, motor club memberships, and state safety inspections Ø Utility companies, gas, light, water, telephone, get a refund on any deposits made; arrange for immediate service in the new city Ø Route men – laundry, paper, milkman, changeover of services Ø School records – ask for copies or transfer of children’s records Ø Medical, dental, prescription histories – ask doctor and dentist for referrals, transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglass, x-rays. Ø Church, club ,civic organizations-transfer memberships, get letter of introduction Ø Pets – ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
And don’t forget to….. Ø Empty freezer, plan use of foods Ø Defrost refrigerator-freezer, place charcoal to absorb odors Ø Have appliances serviced for moving Ø Remember arrangements for TV, dish and antenna Ø Clean rugs or clothing before moving…have them moving wrapped Ø With your moving counselor, check insurance coverage, packing and unpacking, labor arrival day, various shipping papers, methods and time of expected payment.
And on Moving Day…. Ø Carry currency, jewelry and documents yourself, or use registered mail Ø Plan for transporting pets; they can be poor travel companions if unhappy Ø Carry travelers checks for quick, available funds Ø Let a close friend or relative know route and schedule you will travel, including overnight stops; use them as a message headquarters Ø Double check closets, drawers and shelves to be sure they are empty. And don’t forget the attic space.
Leave any keys or opener transmitters needed by new owner with your Realtor.
